Benefits of Belgian Blue taking centre stage

The introduction of the grid payment system has resulted in a significant increase in the use of Belgian Blue sires across all cow types in the past 12 months.
This move towards the Belgian Blue is expected to increase the number of Belgian Blue progeny on offer in Irish marts this autumn to supply the export market and the Irish beef finishers.
The Irish Belgian Blue Cattle Society stand in Athy will include a pedigree, beef crossbred and dairy crossbred, in order to highlight the advantages of the breed for the Irish market.
Tomorrow is the show day for the breed, with four pedigree Belgian Blue classes taking place and the junior bull, breeding heifer, bull calf and heifer calf titles up for grabs.
Judging begins at 1pm but all animals will be paraded, with commentary, each day of the Ploughing Championships.
The bulls entered in these classes will be presented for sale at the upcoming premier sale on Saturday, October 22 at Roscrea Mart.
The society will hold three sales in the coming months at Roscrea Mart on October 22, February 19 and April 14.
Members of the society will be on hand every day to discuss Belgian Blue breeding with visitors and interested breeders can collect a copy of the Belgian Blue sire directory from the stand.
