Two global giants remain largest buyers of EU beef
China and the US remain the largest importers of EU beef, new statistics from Europe show.
China and Hong Kong imported just shy of 350,000t of beef, while the US imports just under 300,000t in the first three months of 2017.
The EU imported just over 50,000t of beef up to March this year and exported approximately 120,000t in the same time. Its export volumes are up on the same time last year, when it sold approximately 85,000t.
The majority of beef and veal products into the EU this year originated in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay - the three accounted for three quarters of the beef and veal imported.
On exports, Hong Kong is the single largest market for EU beef and veal, accounting for 20,550t in the first three months of the year, with Israel and Lebanon next.
The figures also show that the US is the world's largest exporter of beef products to-date this year, over 100,000t ahead of Australia and Brazil in the first three months of the year. Last year the US exported the same amount as Brazil, both behind Australia.
