Limousin tops calf sale in the Kingdom
A Limousin x heifer topped the trade, selling for €500, at the South West Limousin Club LMX Calf Show and Sale which was held in conjunction with the regular weekly calf sale at the Co-op Livestock Mart, Castleisland, Co Kerry.
There were over 1,000 calves on offer across all breeds at the the farmer-owned co-operative which is centrally located to serve breeders from all over Kerry, West Limerick and North and West Cork. Purchasers usually hail from a wide range of the broader country.
Judges on the day were John O'Connor, a well established Ballybunion butcher who also runs the Gleanasmole Pedigree Limousin herd in conjunction with a commercial suckler herd, and Sarah McElligott owner of the renowned Shannon pedigree Limousin herd.
They awarded the top rosette in the heifer section to a mid-March born calf born presented by Martin Scanlon, Lisselton, by the stock bull on the farm - the TVR son sold for the top price of the day when knocked down to Aidan Murray, from Galway at €500.
Commenting on the award winner and price topper, John O'Connor said: "this is a super heifer calf, she has length, size and style, she should make an ideal suckler cow."
The second placed heifer came from the same herd and was bred by the same sire.
Described as "a super calf - great quality", she was purchased by Aidan Moore, Tullamore, Co Offaly for €450.
Top award winner in the bulls was a late March born calf, AI bred son of Castleview Gazelle (ZAG), from the herd of Michael O'Donoghue, Kilmurray.
