Processing of new livestock tags for the beef genomics scheme started within the past week, with the first batch of tags on schedule to be issued to participants by September 1.
The contract for the production and distribution of the tags has been awarded to Euro Tags Ltd at Mullinahone Co-Op in South Tipperary. Liam Egan, general manager, confirmed that the file information for the first 56,000 tags has so far been received.
"We are expecting to process about 60,000 of the new tags per week over the next six weeks," he said, with around 2.2m tags issued so far this year.
He said some quality problems with 2013 tags have been rectified and replacements have been provided for free.
