FARMERS are being warned to be on the alert for cattle rustling, writes Barry Duggan.
Sporadic incidents of cattle theft across the country have led to farm leaders urging farmers to take every possible precaution to secure their livestock.
Recently, three cattle were stolen from a farm in Sixmilebridge, Co Clare. Previously, other livestock was stolen from holdings in other Clare areas.
In September, 14 cattle were stolen from a farm in the Emyvale area of Monaghan.
Michael Guinan, who serves as chairperson of the ICMSA beef and cattle committee, said the best safeguard against this wanton theft was an active and vigilant lookout being kept by whole communities.
He said that the loss of cattle through rustling at any stage is serious, but most particularly this year given the year suffered by farmers.
