Athenry warming up for Galway sale

The 87th Annual Show and Sale of purebred registered Galway sheep takes place in Athenry Mart on Monday, September 20.
The show kicks off at 11.00am, with sales getting under way at 1pm sharp.
The organisers claim that a number of quality male and female sheep have been entered, with the catalogue of ewe lambs particularly strong.
'The Galway' is Ireland's only native sheep breed and has rare breed status. They qualify for payment under a measure for conservation of genetic resources in the AEOS scheme.
There will be an emotional element to the show for the association as the Casey family are presenting a cup for the best pen of female sheep in memory of the late Joe Casey, the former chairman of the association and a lifelong breeder of quality Galway sheep.
