A berry good idea
Since Ribena stopped buying from Irish growers two years ago, Des Jeffares has become the last commercial blackcurrent farmer in the country to keep alive a tradition that spans three generations.
Based just outside Wexford town, Des and his wife Margaret have now started bottling and selling 'Mr Jeffares Irish Blackcurrant Cordial'. With no added sugar, the product will be available in SuperValu outlets and health food stores in the southeast before a planned national rollout.
"There is a wealth of expertise handed down through generations of my family to develop the specialisation to grow the crop on a large scale," he said.
