The small parcel, with fine views over the Slieve Bloom Mountains, was part of a larger 109ac farm at Killeigh and Geashill, located between Tullamore and Mountmellick that sold in lots for a total of €1.31m

According to auctioneer Matt Dunne, all the land is situated in a rich vein of ground that runs through the area.

Another strong price was paid for a field extending to 46.75ac that has a great reputation for finishing cattle. It was bought by two local farmers for €542,000 or €11,594/ac.

"This was a particularly difficult auction that went on for three hours," said Mr Dunne. "We knew the land was special and there would be phenomenal interest in it."

The remaining land also made good prices with a 34.69ac parcel sold for €373,000 or €10,752/ac and a 23.35ac piece sold for €260,000 or €11,135/ac.
