KFC chief in €70m mall bid

By PROPERTY

Thursday December 04 2008

KFC franchise owner Michael Herbert has plans for a €70m shopping development at the Bow Street Mall in Lisburn, Co Antrim. The developer, who owns properties in the Republic, has submitted a planning application for the project.

He is hoping to attract the UK department store chain John Lewis to Lisburn by including a 260,000sq ft store at the mall. However, John Lewis has indicated its preference for the nearby Sprucefield scheme, which Australian developer Westfield is planning to extend.

Herbert is one of the owners of the 400,000sq ft Bow Street Mall, where he also plans to add 30 more shops, bringing the end value of Bow Street to £180m (€214m).

He also controls Belfast-based Herbel Restaurants, which owns the largest KFC chicken fast-food franchise in Europe with 70 outlets in Ireland and the Isle of Man.

He also owns commercial and residential developments throughout Ireland and the UK.
