BUDGET 2014 has been a very tough Budget for the elderly.
Pensions, savings, medical cards; all these changes hurt the elderly. There can be no doubt about this. Some people will no longer even be able to die following the decision to remove the grant to cover funeral costs in some cases.
But there are very clear winners as well; what my colleague Charlie Weston often calls the squeezed middle. Young and middle aged people with families are finally seeing signs that the Government has not forgotten them. Medical help for kids under five news means many people can stop worrying about a visit to the doctor.
With so many families now emigrating although the parents have jobs here, it was time to start worrying about the brain drain. By helping business, as the Budget does, and by helping families, as this Budget does, the Government will ultimately help the aged as well. After all, somebody has to work to provide their pensions.
