A Cork pensioner is hoping for increases in allowances and improvements to the health service in this year's budget.
Pat Kelly (73) lives in Blackrock, near Cork city, where his niece looks after him.
After major back surgery in 1984, he was forced to quit work aged 41. He spent a lot of his retirement caring for his own aging parents. His father passed away in 2009.
He is now finding it difficult to keep up with insurance and taxes, and says much of his savings have already been spent on repairing his heating and appliances in his home.
Pat hasn’t travelled outside of Ireland since 1983, when he took his mother to New York on a holiday.
He says his car is his independence.
Pat also feels strongly about the treatment of carers in Budget 2017, and hopes they will be rewarded this year.
Pat has an active social life, and is a member of his local history group.
