BUDGET day started badly for dozens of motorists who found parking tickets on their cars – even though their vehicles were parked legally.
But it transpired that the tickets were part of a hoax after a prankster had printed fake parking tickets and placed them on cars in Galway city.
The hoax tickets, which closely resemble official tickets, were placed on vehicles in the Westside area. The hoax came to light when motorists contacted city council offices to complain.
Now officials are fearful that people issued with genuine tickets might think they were fake and not pay them.
"We don't want people who have got genuine tickets to incur additional fines later, so we would ask people to examine tickets," said services director Ciaran Hayes.
