Budget 2017 should restore pay for new secondary school teachers, a teacher from Sligo has said.
Sean Lynch is a secondary school teacher. Because he qualified in 2012, his pay is down €7,000 per year compared to teachers who qualified before 2010.
Sean lived in London for two years after qualifying. His first job in Dublin when he came back only gave him eleven hours a week, which meant his monthly wage was just €880.
Since living in Dublin is so expensive, he could barely pay for rent, bills and food.
“I feel there’s far too many people, especially young, newly qualified teachers, that are barely making an existence, never mind making a living.”
