The chair of the Fiscal Advisory Council has had to retract comments suggesting Budget 2016 may breach European rules.
This afternoon the Council published a clarification saying the Budget is within the parameters of the tough new budgetary rules.
In an interview on RTE’S Morning Ireland, Council chair Professor John McHale suggested the Government would have needed to do more than laid out to cut the structural deficit.
But the adjustment on which the Budget was based was confirmed as being appropriate by the European Commission, the clarification said.
The statement said that Mr McHale regrets any confusion caused.
