Agri-tech business BHSL has taken over Hydro International, a wastewater and effluent treatment firm, in a deal understood to be worth €5m.

It comes as Limerick's BHSL closed a €7m fundraising round. An earlier fundraising, completed in 2016, raised €5m. The funds are to support its growth plans, as the business actively seeks further acquisitions in the waste processing sector.

BHSL specialises in turning chicken manure into energy. It said the Hydro deal is the first step in plans to expand the range of applications of its fluidised bed combustion (FBC) technology, to serve the municipal and industrial sectors in extracting value from waste. Hydro, including 254 staff, will be headed up by Hydro MD, PJ Finn.
