They don't build 'em like this any more, at least not in these parts. Located in Ballyclough, 7km from Mallow, Parklands was constructed in the heady days of 2003, with- as they say - no expense spared. It is a large house by any standards, and comes with all the bells and whistles required of a contemporary pleasure palace.
Approached via a private driveway, the two-storey house presents an imposing façade, with wings to either side of the main house. It's not immediately apparent from the outside, but one of these houses a swimming pool, and the other an over-sized garage.
There's an elaborate gravel apron to the front, with parking for a whole fleet of cars. Steps lead to the front door, which opens into a grand entrance hallway with feature staircase.
Parklands is a house designed for living large and is private enough to ensure that the neighbours are precluded from cocking a snook as the occupants do so.
For starters there's 999 sqm of living space, with an additional 127 sqm of garage. The garage handily links directly into the kitchen at the back of the house, so residents can drive straight in without having to set a foot outdoors - particularly useful when the weather is inclement. There's an indoor swimming pool and gym, and a hard tennis court in the garden.
The accommodation is arranged over two floors, with the ground floor dedicated to an easy flow of reception and living space suitable both for modern family life and for entertaining on a grand scale. Certainly the new owners will have no shortage of willing visitors eager to come over and share in the enjoyment of Parklands' lavish facilities. And if they find that their guests are having such a good time that they are unwilling to leave, then the owners will be able to install them in one of the house's six bedrooms, five of which are en suite.
Prospective purchasers are being offered the option of several packages in relation to Parklands. The house on its own, with "pleasure grounds" of 3.2 acres - including the afore-mentioned tennis court - is priced at €895,000, while 72 acres of forestry are on offer at €220,000, and a 3.8 acre site across the road costs €40,000. The price for the whole lot is €1.155 million.
There's no indication from the selling agents as to the construction cost of the house but as Parklands was built in 2003 when construction costs were climbing, it's safe to assume that it was eye-watering and that new owners will acquire the property at a substantial discount.
For a family in the market for a contemporary country mansion, Parklands offers the prospect of a rural retreat, within reasonable proximity of schools and shops, with no stinting on mod-cons.
