Bank of Ireland gets XXX domain name

HARRY LEECH

CRH and a number of Ireland's top companies may soon find their brands in unusually raunchy company in the internet's newly designated "red-light zone", after failing to register .xxx domains for their companies.

Top plcs such as DCC, Kerry Group, Glanbia and Ryanair are also among those who failed to register a .xxx web address during the designated period. The companies will now have to wait until they come on general release to prevent them being hijacked by cyber squatters.

According to Blacknight chief executive Michele Neylon, "a lot of the bigger brands have been doing protective blocking during the sunrise period" in order to prevent their names being associated with adult content.

These include many of Ireland's top-listed companies, including Smurfit Kappa, Elan and Aer Lingus. State-owned Allied Irish Bank and rival Bank of Ireland have also registered .xxx addresses, as has multinational drinks company Diageo, which registered .xxx domains for Guinness, Smithwicks and Bushmills.
