Thailand's prime minister has partially lifted a state of emergency after protests in three provinces

Monday August 16 2010

Thailand's prime minister lifted a state of emergency in three provinces but is keeping the decree in place in Bangkok and six other provinces.

Tawin Pleansri, head of the National Security Council, has said the emergency rule was lifted in the northern provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and north-eastern Ubon Ratchathani.

The state of emergency was initially declared in April in Bangkok after anti-government protesters broke into the Parliament building to press their demands for early elections.

About 90 people died and more than 1,400 were injured during two months of protests.

The government kept the decree in place in Bangkok and elsewhere citing security concerns.
