Kim Aris, son of Aung Sang Suu Kyi, has applied for a visa to Burma to see his mother for the first time in a decade

Friday November 05 2010

Speculation that Aung San Suu Kyi could soon be freed by Burma's junta has mounted after one of her sons travelled to Bangkok to obtain a visa to see her for the first time in a decade.

Kim Aris, 33, last saw his mother in December 2000 and has repeatedly been denied visas by the Burmese government to see the pro-democracy leader.

Mr Kim lives in Britain, while his older brother, Alexander, reportedly resides in the United States.

Ms Suu Kyi's lawyer, Nyan Win, revealed that Mr Kim was in Bangkok to apply for a visa at the Burma Embassy.

Burma will hold its first election in 20 years this Sunday and Ms Suu Kyi's latest detention expires six days later on November 13.
