Two small planes have collided in mid-air over central Germany, killing seven people, police said.

The collision happened near the small town of Woelfersheim, north of Frankfurt, police in Friedberg said. The aircraft crashed into neighbouring fields about 400 yards apart.

It was not immediately clear where the aircraft came from or where they were headed, and there was no information on the victims' identities.

Police had no immediate information on what might have caused the crash.
