Senate leader hurt in road crash

US Senate majority leader Harry Reid has been taken to hospital after a six-car crash on a road through Las Vegas.

The Nevada Democrat's office said Mr Reid, 72, suffered rib and hip bruises in the crash which happened at about 1.10pm local time.

He was taken to hospital by his security staff as a precaution but was later allowed to leave.

Mr Reid's officials said other members of the senator's security detail and a member of his staff suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

The senator was wearing a seatbelt at the time, his office said.

Police said six cars were involved in the apparent chain reaction rear-end crash, including two police cars and two Capitol Police vehicles.
