A United Airlines flight from Denver, Colorado, was escorted to Washington DC by fighter jets after a passenger began praying in an aisle, it has emerged.

KUSA-TV said the plane was escorted by the jets after the crew declared an emergency.

The plane landed on Thursday at Dulles International Airport.

The Denver TV station said the crew made the decision because the male passenger started praying in the middle of an aisle.

United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy says a passenger was not following flight attendant instructions for landing.
