New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and civic officials on Long Island have decided to start rationing petrol in the wake of devastating storms.

Petrol will be available to drivers with licence plate numbers ending in an odd number starting on Friday morning.

Drivers with plate numbers ending in an even number can access fuel on Saturday.

Mr Bloomberg said that only 25% of the city's petrol stations are open. He estimated the tight supplies could last another couple of weeks.
