Drone 'killed top al Qaida leader'

A senior al Qaida leader was killed by a US drone attack in Pakistan, officials have reported

A US drone strike killed a senior al Qaida leader near the Afghan border, Pakistani intelligence officials have said.

Sheikh Khalid bin Abdel Rehman al-Hussainan, also known as Abu Zaid al-Kuwaiti, died on Thursday when missiles hit a house near the town of Mir Ali in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, the three officials said.

They said al-Kuwaiti's wife and daughter were wounded in the attack. His wife died at a hospital on Friday in Miran Shah, another North Waziristan town.

The officials said al-Kuwaiti was buried near Mir Ali on Friday.

They said al-Kuwaiti replaced Abu Yahya al-Libi, al Qaida's second in command who was killed in a US drone strike in North Waziristan in June.
