Czechs protest against austerity

Thousands of Czechs have rallied in protest against the government's policies and austerity cuts and other policies on the 23rd anniversary of the Velvet Revolution.

Police estimate some 10,000 protesters gathered in Prague's central Wenceslas Square to demand the government's resignation.

The protest was organised by labour unions and non-governmental organisations.

They condemned such government policies as a hike in retail sales taxes as well a plan to pay billions of dollars to the country's churches in compensation for property seized by the former totalitarian Communist regime.

The 1989 peaceful revolution led by late president Vaclav Havel toppled more than 40 years of the Communist rule.
