City burns rubbish dumps in streets

Mounds of burning uncollected rubbish in Jerez (AP)

Dozens of mounds of uncollected rubbish have been set on fire by angry residents in the Spanish tourist city of Jerez.

They were protesting over a 20-day refuse collection strike that has left the city resembling a dump in many areas.

Firefighters had to put out 85 blazes in suburbs on the second night of protests. In some areas, police had to accompany them for protection.

The rubbish collectors are striking over planned job cuts.

Jerez, where sherry has long been produced, is suffering badly in the economic crisis affecting Spain and has accumulated massive debts.
