A police officer collapsed while on a skiing break in France

A British police officer has died on a skiing holiday with colleagues in France.

Richard Williams, 32, died on Tuesday afternoon after collapsing, West Midlands Police confirmed. A police spokesman said he was a constable with the force and paid tribute to a "much-loved son, brother and cherished colleague".

Pc Williams - known as Rich to friends and colleagues - was a response officer working with the local policing unit in Wolverhampton.

Chief Inspector Darren Walsh, of Wolverhampton Police, said: "Rich was a much-loved son, brother and a cherished colleague who will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rich's family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time."

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We have been informed of the death of a British national in France and consular staff are following up."

In a later statement, the FCO spokesman said: "We are providing consular assistance at this difficult time for the family."

Mr Williams died in the ski resort of Val d'Isere in south-east France, according to sources.

Meanwhile, police colleagues continued to pay tribute to the officer, who had served with the West Midlands force for 10 years.

West Midlands Police Federation chairman Ian Edwards said: "We were all very saddened to hear that Rich collapsed and died while on a skiing trip. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time."

Tom Cuddeford, branch deputy chairman, said: "I knew Rich and he was a very well-liked and respected individual and a hard-working officer. He will definitely be missed and his death, I am sure, has come as a great shock to all who knew him."
