Waterford 1-16 Galway 0-18

Sunday July 26 2009

Waterford have completed a dramatic comeback to beat Galway by 1-16 to 0-18 in today's All Ireland Hurling Quarter final in Semple Stadium.

The Deise started brightly with Eoin Kelly slotting over two points but Galway responded to take a two point lead in the opening ten minutes. A series of scores from the likes of Andy Smith, Damien Hayes, Joe Canning and Cyril Donnellan opened up a four point lead for the Tribesmen as Waterford had no reply.

Both sides traded scores but Galway kept their five point lead with 15 minutes left but Waterford continued to chip away at the lead as their fans sensed a comeback.

Galway went almost 15 minutes without a point.

The introduction of Dan Shanahan changed the game and he combined well to set up fellow substitute Shane Walsh who hit the back of the Galway net in the 68th minute to ensure a frantic finish as a single point was all that separated the sides.

Eoin Kelly's 12th point of the day levelled the match for the fourth time.

John Mullane completed the Waterford comeback as the Deise move into a semi final against Kilkenny.
