Two motorists have been killed in separate car crashes.

A 40-year-old man died and his front-seat passenger was seriously injured when his car hit trees and a wall just outside the village of Belclare, Tuam, Co Galway, at about 11.30pm on Friday.

The 46-year-old passenger was taken to University College Hospital Galway, where he remains.

Earlier, a woman died when her car collided with an articulated truck in Shambough, New Ross, Co Wexford, just before 6.30pm.

The 35-year-old was seriously injured and taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses of both collisions to come forward.

Scotland's Justice Secretary has defended his decision to release the Lockerbie bomber almost three years ago as the only man convicted of the tragedy is buried in Libya today.Kenny MacAskill said he had made the "right decision for the right reasons" as he gave his reaction to the death of Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi.Former Libyan intelligence officer Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison for the 1988 bombing of a US airliner over the Dumfries and Galloway town which claimed 270 lives.
