Taoiseach rules out govt intervention in Shannon row
Tuesday September 04 2007
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has ruled out government intervention to prevent Aer Lingus from axing its Shannon to Heathrow flights.
Mr Ahern was speaking for the first time last night about the controversial decision, which is being vehemently opposed by local businesses and politicians.
He said the government would do nothing to undermine what he described as a commercial decision by Aer Lingus and the focus must switch to finding another operator to re-establish the service.
Mr Ahern said connections between Shannon and the wider world were "crucial" and hard work is needed to pitch the route to a new airline.
