Taoiseach 'confident he will be exonerated of wrongdoing'

Wednesday April 02 2008

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has insisted this morning that he is confident he will be exonerated of any wrongdoing by the Mahon Tribunal.

Announcing his intention to resign on May 6th, shortly after his historic address to the US Congress, Mr Ahern said he had never enriched himself by misusing the trust of the people.

After paying a lengthy tribute to his supporters, he said he regretted the ongoing confusion about his personal finances in the 1990s.

He said he had made the best decisions he could during a difficult period in his family life and had never put his personal interests above the public good..

Mr Ahern admitted that his dealings with the Mahon Tribunal were overshadowing the work of the Government at a time of economic uncertainty and a looming referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

He said his decision to resign was solely a personal one and was motivated by what is best for the people.

The Taoiseach also said he was privileged to have served the community and the Fianna Fail party and was proud to have made a contribution to peace and economic prosperity in Ireland.
