Reilly slams HSE attitude to vetting of doctors

Monday December 03 2007

Fine Gael TD James Reilly has slammed the HSE's attitude towards ensuring that hospital doctors are competent enough to do their job.

The criticism follows reports this morning that the HSE has refused to disclose the background checks carried out on a Finnish doctor whose work is under scrutiny at Cork University Hospital.

The doctor reportedly has a record of negligence in his native country after giving one woman and all clear for cancer and misdiagnosing another woman with cancer, leading to her having a needless mastectomy.

This morning's reports say the HSE's vetting procedures mean the onus is on the employee to show they are not the subject of an overseas investigation.
