Politicians accused of insulting victims of crime

Monday July 07 2008

A leading campaign group is accusing politicians of insulting the victims of crime by seeking special treatment for convicted criminals.

Reports this morning say documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that the Department of Justice received more than 50 representations from TDs and Senators on behalf of prisoners in 2006 and early 2007.

Several cabinet ministers were among those making the representatives on behalf of people convicted of a range of offences, including drink-driving, drugs offences and even murder.

AdVic, which campaigns on behalf of crime victims, says the extent of the lobbying is "staggering" and only adds to the trauma suffered by victims.
