Minister admits government will have to listen to public on medical cards issue

The Drugs Minister says the Government will have to listen to the public's concerns over the new medical card scheme.
Last night the Taoiseach Brian Cowen indicated he would contact the Irish Medical Organisation in the coming weeks to see if some agreement can be reached.
Mr Cowen said the current scheme which automatically entitles over 70's to a card could no longer be sustained due to the change in economic circumstances.
Minister of State with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy John Curran has said there will be widespread hopes for a compromise as the reaction to the move so far shows it was hugely unpopular.
Meanwhile the fourteen thousand strong Irish Countrywomens Association has made a direct appeal to the Taoiseach to admit that the government made a mistake and drop the proposal.
Spokesperson Breda O Hanrahan has claimed that the proposal has already caused widespread stress and anxiety especially for older people and their families.
