Lenihan says today is important day for Ireland

Tuesday October 14 2008
Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has described today as an important day for Ireland in tackling the challenges of the economic downturn.
This afternoon, Mr Lenihan is due to unveil what is expected to be the toughest budget in decades, with tax increases and major spending cuts on the cards.
Speaking ahead of a cabinet meeting this morning, Mr Lenihan said Ireland needed to face up to changed economic realities and devise an appropriate response to them.
He also indicated again that the budget would target high earners and protect the most vulnerable members of society.
The Taoiseach, meanwhile, told reporters that the budget would be difficult, but the Government had to take unavoidable tough decisions in the interests of the country.
