Thursday January 31 2008

The Labour Party is welcoming the Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy's decision to establish a full-time specialist unit to deal with gang-related crime.

The Organised Crime Unit, which was set up on a temporary basis in 2005, will become a dedicated unit aimed at tackling gun crime, organised crime and drug trafficking.

Mr Murphy's made the announcement at his first Garda graduation ceremony in Templemore since becoming Commissioner.

Labour's Justice Spokesperson Pat Rabbitte said that the new crime unit is a welcome development but it must be properly resourced.
