Gormley unveils proposals for elected Dublin mayor

Tuesday April 22 2008

Environment Minister John Gormley has unveiled details of his proposal to have a directly elected mayor in Dublin in three years' time.

The move is one of a number of initiatives in a green paper on local government reform published by Mr Gormley today.

The proposed new mayor of Dublin would have the power to oversee planning, housing, waste disposal and water provision and would also chair the new Dublin Transport Authority.

Mr Gormley says this would help ensure better public services in the capital.
