FG demands action on cost of school books
Fine Gael says a survey it carried out has found that parents are being ripped off by a money racket in the school books market.
The party says four out of five publishers of secondary school books have increased their charges since last year.
The Society of St Vincent de Paul has already raised concern about the practice of introducing revised editions of textbooks every year, which prevents parents from buying second-hand books or from passing books from one sibling to another.
Fine Gael education spokesperson Brian Hayes is demanding immediate steps to halt this practice.
He is also calling on the Department of Education to introduce a proper school books rental scheme in every school.
