Politicians risk fines over remaining election posters
Politicians who have failed to take down their election posters are eligible to be fined for littering from today.
The deadline for the removal of posters from lampposts across the country expired at midnight last night.
Under anti-litter legislation, candidates who have failed to clean up after themselves can be fined ?125 per poster.
However, most local authorities are expected to treat offenders leniently, with Dublin City Council saying it won't be enforcing the law until after the bank holiday weekend.
Even then, it says candidates will be given a warning to remove posters within 24 hours before any fine is imposed.
