A man is fighting for his life after an early morning assault.

The 25-year-old is in a critical condition in South Tipperary General Hospital after he was attacked at Liberty Square, Thurles.

A 22-year-old suspect was arrested and is being questioned at Thurles Garda Station under section 4 of the criminal justice act.

He can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

Detectives have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Obama told reporters at the end of the G8 meeting on Saturday, at Camp David in Maryland, that he and leaders of seven other major industrial nations agreed that "growth and jobs must be our top priority," and a stable, growing European economy was in everyone's best interest.
