Former hurling star consents to extradition on fraud charges
A former Galway hurling star has consented to his extradition to the UK on charges of fraud and perverting the course of justice.
Pearse Piggott from Gort in Galway is wanted in the UK where its alleged he was involved in a multi-million Euro scam involving caged hens which were allegedly passed off to UK consumers as being free range or organic.
The court heard the 48-year-old from Ballylennon in Gort runs the egg distribution firm, Pearse Piggott and Sons.
Its alleged the all Ireland senior hurling winner was involved in a multi million Euro scam where eggs were falsely passed off to British Consumers as being free range or organic.
Piggott faces a charge of conspiracy to defraud and of perverting the course of justice.
The offences are alleged to have taken place between January 2004, and December 2007.
Today Mr Piggott took the stand and consented to being surrendered to the UK authorities, after he availed of legal advice and Mr Justice Michael Peart said he was aware of the consequences of giving his consent.
He's been remanded on bail pending his extradition which will take place in ten days time.
