Christian Brothers issue apology to abuse victims

Tuesday May 26 2009

The Christian Brothers have issued an apology to all those who were abused while in their care.

The order issued a statement this afternoon saying it accepts "with shame, the findings of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse".

The Christian Brothers admit that their responses to reports of abuse in the past were "inadequate", and recognise that they have "a moral obligation" to the victims.

However, the statement makes no mention of the issue of compensation, and the controversial indemnity deal.

Instead, the Christian Brothers say that in a bid to make amends for their abuses in the past, they will review how "resources can be best applied on reparation for abuses of the past and as an investment in child education and welfare for present and future generations".
