Bruton gets to bottom of Rear award

Tuesday February 09 2010

Fine Gael's Richard Bruton has shown a cheeky side by sneaking a peak at one of the nominees for Britain's Rear of the Year award - the UK's Minister for Women.

It is not clear whether the finance spokesman is getting behind Harriet Harman, the British Labour Party's deputy chief, to clinch the annual accolade.

But just minutes after a sombre frontbench meeting over the fall-out from the shock resignation of George Lee, the Fine Gael deputy chief was spotted in the grounds of Leinster House flicking through a news digest detailing the nomination.

The sheet, which had been stuffed in an A4 pad, contained a head shot of Ms Harman's photo bearing a headline saying she was in the running for the honour.

Footballer Ian Wright, glamour model Melinda Messenger and singer Rachel Stevens are among previous winners, all of whom were nominated by the public.

Ms Harman, renowned for her feminist view, is the first MP to be nominated for the annual award in its 28-year history and would become the oldest title holder if she won.

The MP has reportedly received 12 nominations for the prize, due to be announced in June.
