Ahern begins tribunal evidence with attack on Gilmartin
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has launched an attack on developer Tom Gilmartin at the Mahon tribunal this morning.
Mr Ahern is giving evidence to the tribunal today and tomorrow about large sums of money he received from wealthy businessmen and friends in the 1990s.
He began today with an opening statement in which launched a strong attack on Mr Gilmartin and others who have made "false and malicious" claims against him.
Mr Gilmartin has told the tribunal that rival developer Owen O'Callaghan told him he had paid £80,000 to Mr Ahern in connection with the Quarryvale project in the 1990s.
Mr Ahern also had a go at AIB, which he said had made "unbelievable" calculations about some of his money.
He insisted that he had never received US$45,000 from anybody during the period under investigation.
