The victim, aged in her 50s, was struck along with a male pedestrian on Abbey Street Upper shortly before 1pm on Friday.

It is believed the man suffered leg injuries which are not life-threatening.

The driver of the car - a small grey Hyundai - was arrested at the scene. The man, aged in his 30s, is being held under the Road Traffic Act at Store Street Garda station.

Luas services into the city centre have been disrupted.

Both pedestrians were taken to the Mater Hospital, where the woman was later pronounced dead.

A Garda spokesman said: "The area is sealed off and the road is closed to facilitate a forensic collision investigation of the scene."

Investigators have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

Separately, a man in his 30s died in a crash involving several cars on one of Wicklow's busiest routes. The collision occurred on the northbound carriageway of the N11, at the Ashford/Rathnew exit, at around 7am. Investigating gardai said the victim's body was taken to Loughlinstown Hospital in Dublin.

The N11 was closed northbound so Garda forensic collision experts could examine the scene. Diversions were put in place. Gardai in Wicklow have appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have been on the N11 at the time to contact them.
