Voters will also choose candidates for 949 seats on county councils around the country while Dail by-elections are being held for Longford/Westmeath and Dublin West.

Numbers of people at ballot stations during the day was reported to be slow but steady ahead of an expected increase in the evening.

The weather was changeable during the day with showers in many areas threatening to dampen turnout.

Some 41 candidates have put themselves forward for the available 11 MEP seats - one less than the last European election after a rejig of constituencies.

More than 2,000 politicians are seeking election to local authorities.

Polling stations opened from 7am to 10pm.

Counting for the local and by-elections will begin in the morning while the tally of ballots for the European elections start on Sunday.
