More than a million cigarettes have been seized in a container off a cargo ship from the United Arab Emirates.

The tobacco, branded Benson & Hedges and worth about 516,000 euros at retail, was discovered by customs officers at Dublin Port yesterday.

The 1.1 million cigarettes would have led to a loss of 430,000 euros in taxes and duties if they had got through security and on to the black market.

The Revenue customs service said the container was falsely declared as foil containers.

It said the seizure was part of an intelligence-led operaton into the organised crime gangs involved in the smuggling of illegal cigarettes and investigations are continuing both nationally and internationally.

The largest ever seizure at an Irish port involved a haul of 120 million smuggled cigarettes at Greenore, Co Louth, in October 2009.
