Man killed in 'machinery accident'

Gardai and the Health and Safety Authority are probing a fatal accident at an ESB power station in Co Longford

A man has died in a suspected workplace accident.

Gardai were alerted to the incident at the ESB power station in Lanesborough, Co Longford, shortly before 1am on Wednesday.

It is believed the man, in his 50s, got trapped in machinery at the plant.

The victim, understood to be a Bord na Mona employee working at the power station, was taken to Mullingar General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gardai and the Health and Safety Authority are investigating.

In a statement, Bord na Mona confirmed it was carrying out an investigation into the death.

"It is with deep regret that we confirm that earlier today a Bord na Mona employee died in an accident at Lough Ree Power Station," a spokesman said.

"The company have been working with the emergency services through the night and have already informed the HSA.

"The company have also begun an internal inquiry into the circumstances of the man's death.

"Our deepest sympathies go to his family at this difficult time."
