Man charged with pensioner's death

Bertie Acheson died after an altercation with an intruder at his home

A 39-year-old man has been charged with the manslaughter of a pensioner who died after an altercation with an intruder in his home.

Bertie Acheson, 72, and his wife Sheila had been in bed at their house in Coleraine, Co Londonderry when they were burgled in April.

He went downstairs to confront the culprit and subsequently collapsed and died after suffering a heart attack.

The charged man, who is from the Antrim area, had been arrested previously by detectives investigating the pensioner's death.

Earlier this month a 23-year-old woman was also charged with Mr Acheson's manslaughter.

The man is due to appear at Ballymena Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
