Man arrested in dissidents probe

Police investigating dissident republican activity conducted searches in Newry, Co Down

A 29-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating dissident republican activity in Northern Ireland.

Detectives on Thursday conducted searches in Newry, Co Down, close to the border with the Irish Republic.

Items were removed for examination and the suspect is being questioned at Antrim police station.

Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland carried out the operation in the Derrybeg and Main Avenue areas as part of an investigation into dissident republican terrorist activity, a spokesman for the force confirmed.

Newry and Mourne area commander, chief inspector Davy Beck, said: "I would like to thank the community for their support during these searches. You have asked us to tackle criminality in the local area and we will continue to do this to make Newry and Mourne a safer place to live."
